Inkjet Printer Ink Cartridges - Two Technologies

Inkjet printing is the workhorse of many home and business computer applications. From vibrant colour images to crisp, clear black lettering, inkjet printers deliver superior results at reasonable price points. Here's some information about inkjet printers and inkjet printer ink cartridges for UK consumers.
Types of Ink Cartridge Printing

Unlike laser printing, where toner is deposited onto the paper by using an electro photographic process, inkjet printing is a non-contact printing modality. This gives inkjet the ability to print onto raised or uneven surfaces. There are two major types of inkjet printing technology, continuous and drop-on-demand. Both use inkjet ink cartridges.

Continuous Inkjet Printing
Continuous inkjet printing that uses standard inkjet cartridges is the most common type. The process uses a high-pressure pumping mechanism to create a continuous stream of ink droplets by drawing from a reservoir of liquid ink and directing the ink through a microscopic nozzle onto paper and other media.

Drop-On-Demand Inkjet Printing: Thermal/Bubble
Drop-on-demand printing divides into two types: thermal/bubble and piezo. Thermal/bubble printing employs printer cartridges that contain a number of chambers filled with ink and tiny heating elements. The heating elements create a steam explosion in the chambers, which in turn creates and propels a bubble of ink onto the paper. Thermal/bubble inkjets use water-based inks, plain paper and relatively inexpensive printer cartridges.

Drop-On-Demand Inkjet Printing: Piezo
Piezo inkjet is popular because of its flexibility. This process can use a number of different ink formulas. The inks themselves can be liquid or solid. Piezo printing also has the ability to print on many different types of surfaces. The formulation of piezo inks can be customised for each type of surface with the addition of acrylics, binders and polymers. Piezo inkjet print heads and ink cartridges produce high quality and superior resolution without sacrificing speed and throughput. Piezo technology is popular for applications where the printing must be scanned, such as bar codes.

Other Applications
Companies are researching whether inkjet technology might be able to print large surfaces by "stitching" multiple print heads together in sequence. Also on the horizon are applications where piezo printing systems will use UV-curable inks to print directly onto non-porous surfaces in place of labels. Such surfaces include bottles or containers for household cleaning products, personal care products or cosmetics.
With such a variety of present and future uses, inkjet printers and printer ink cartridges stand poised to utilise second- and third-generation technologies in the UK.
